Main Steamboat Arabia ( 866 reads) Friday, December 18, 2009 (19:49:00)

In 1856, the steamboat Arabia sank in the Missouri river north of Kansas City. This was a common occurrence as 400 steamboats sank on the river but the Arabia was located and salvaged. Parts of the boat and the treasures it carried now reside in the Steamboat Arabia museum in Kansas City, Missouri. It is an amazing story and an amazing museum well worth a vist.

Our interest in the Arabia is in the tools that were on board. We get a very good picture of what was available to those settlers of the American west. These tools were headed to miners and the Arabia's destination was Council Bluffs, Iowa after completing a stop in Kansas City. The museums's website doesn't give much information on the tools so I will show some of the pictures I took while I was there. Be warned I was not prepared to properly photograph the exhibits. Many of the areas are dimly lit and flash prohibited in order to preserve the colors of the fabrics. Also many of the exhibits are behind glass. Next time I will take a tripod and try to do better.
